Dear Clients and Friends:
We would like to inform you that, starting June 2025, key labor reforms will come into effect or begin their implementation process in Mexico, directly impacting employer obligations and employee rights.
Below is a summary of the most relevant changes:
1. Chair Law – Effective June 17, 2025
Employers must ensure that their workers have the right to rest in a chair with a backrest during their workday. This provision is particularly relevant for sectors such as commerce and services.
Accordingly, we recommend evaluating the ergonomic conditions of workstations and preparing an immediate implementation plan. The Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) will issue complementary regulations within 30 days.
2. Workday Reform – Forums Begin June 19, 2025
Public discussions will begin for a potential reduction of the workweek to 40 hours by 2030. Forums will be held in various cities across the country:
- June 19: Mexico City
- June 23: Monterrey
- June 26 and 30: Guadalajara
- July 3: Querétaro
- July 7: Cancún
We recommend staying informed on the outcomes of these public discussions and evaluating internal scenarios for a possible transition to a reduced workweek.
3. Digital Platform Work – Pilot Program Begins June 27, 2025
Mandatory affiliation to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) will begin for delivery drivers and drivers of digital platforms. The goal is to provide social security and coverage for accidents, regardless of the driver´s or delivery person income level.
Accordingly, we recommend that companies operating under collaborative economy models review their contractual structure and prepare compliance mechanisms with the IMSS.
