On September 25, 2025, China announced the launch of an investigation into Mexico’s plans to increase tariffs on imports of more than 1,371 tariff items originating in countries with which Mexico does not have a free trade agreement, including China.

According to the Chinese government, this investigation will last six months and, if necessary, appropriate measures will be imposed to safeguard the interests of Chinese industry.

Along with this announcement, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce initiated the first anti-dumping investigation in history against products of Mexican origin, which was initiated ex officio by such authority. The anti-dumping investigation concerns imports of pecans originating in Mexico, targeting producers and exporters in the states of Coahuila and Sonora.

The Chinese government’s announcement, as well as the launch of the first anti-dumping investigation in history against imports from Mexico, is a clear sign that China will not stand idly by regarding Mexico’s plan to increase tariffs, and will respond with tariff and non-tariff measures to protect the stability of its industrial sector.
