Dear Clients and Friends:
On March 28, 2025, the Official Mexican Standard NOM-017-STPS-2024 regarding the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in workplaces was published in the Federal Official Gazette (DOF).
Obligations for employers:
- Perform a detailed risk assessment by area and position.
- Refer to official tables to determine the appropriate PPE.
- Ensure that PPE meets official certification standards.
- Provide PPE to workers and visitors.
- Provide personnel with training on the correct use, maintenance, and replacement of PPE.
- Ensure that contractors are informed about and comply with the necessary safety measures.
- Maintain records of training and PPE management.
- Provide instructions in Spanish or in the worker’s native language.
- Employers may optionally hire an accredited inspection unit to asses compliance with the standard.
- Keep evidence of compliance for at least one year.
Obligations for workers:
- Attend training sessions on the correct use of PPE.
- Use and inspect their equipment before, during, and after each shift.
- Report to the employer if the equipment requires maintenance or replacement.
The standard will come into effect six months after publication. During this
transition period, NOM-017-STPS-2008 will remain in effect, and necessary adjustments must be made to comply with the new standard.
Labor authorities may offer guidance without imposing sanctions until the new standard comes into effect.
