The Government of Mexico has announced its intention to gradually reduce the standard workweek to 40 hours, with the goal of implementing this change no later than January 2030.
Key elements of the announcement include:
- Reduction of the workweek to 40 hours.
- Gradual implementation over a period of up to five years.
- A social dialogue process involving all sectors of society.
This initiative aligns with the recommendations of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which advises that such transitions be carried out progressively, allowing employers sufficient time to adapt to the new framework.
The 40-hour workweek has also been established as a key objective in the recently published National Development Plan, underscoring its strategic importance for the current administration.
Many details are still to be defined. To that end, public forums and dialogue tables will be organized across the country, with participation from government representatives, employers, unions, workers, and labor experts.
