Dear Clients and Friends,

On December 19, 2024, the Executive Branch published a decree in the Official Gazette of the Federation through which new measures are proposed to address the ongoing water crisis in Mexico.

According to the Executive Branch, it is necessary to establish new measures that involve the participation of all three levels of government, as well as several industry sectors and the general population, for the security, protection, and sustainability of water resources.

Due to the above, new objectives were proposed, including the following:

– Ensure the human right to water in adequate quantity and quality.

– Promote the efficient use of water in the industrial, agricultural, and livestock sectors.

– Invest in water infrastructure through the National Water Program.

– Promote public-private-social collaboration to improve water management.

– Achieve effective and sustainable management of water concessions.

– Digitize and simplify procedures related to this sector.

– Promote technological innovation for water treatment, reuse, and purification, including biotechnology and green infrastructure.

– Adopt adaptation and mitigation measures in response to climate change, including reforestation and environmental restoration.

– Prevent and restore the pollution of rivers and water bodies.

– Implement an ongoing awareness campaign on the use and care of water.

According to this decree, a new committee integrated by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, through the National Water Commission, in conjunction with local authorities, universities and social sector organizations, would be in charge of implementing these objectives.

With this, the Executive Branch aims to guarantee fair and sustainable access to water, addressing the country’s current water challenges.
